4 Simple Steps Towards Becoming a Virtual Assistant!

Updated: Jan 31, 2020

I’ve had the joy of being a virtual assistant and business owner for 5 years and in that time, I have gone from sharing what I do and having people be completely confused - to sharing what I do and instead of asking what it means, they simply ask me my specialty. That growth has been refreshing.

Having a virtual assistant is no longer a foreign concept and many of your favorite online brands, entrepreneurs and influencers are now powered by virtual assistants who help them make life happen.

The industry is growing rapidly and there is a simple reason for that. The business landscape is changing and whereas in the past an entrepreneur would open a physical business space and then look to expand online, now entrepreneurs are starting off digitally and looking to avoid opening physical office space.

Keeping overhead low and revenue high is the name of the game. However, they still need powerful support to get it done. There is not one business that can operate without someone handling the day to day administration.

With that – there is a HIGH demand for what I do. It allows me the flexibility and freedom to work in a way that fits my lifestyle, support my long- and short-term dreams and work with incredible people who are changing the world.

So, it is no surprise to me that you have found your way here in your search to learn how you can be apart of this growth. Kudos to you for doing your research.

How do you become a virtual assistant?

Here are 4 simple steps you can take towards launching your online business.

How to Become a Virtual Assistant: Step 1: Outline Everything You Are Amazing At.

The first step to becoming a Virtual Assistant is identifying what you plan to bring to the marketplace. It’s easy to say – Oh well I know how to do everything – but I promise you that is the easiest way to build a business you resent.

Focus on the areas of that you enjoy, and you can build your ideal business and customize your marketing towards that. Whether that is social media support, business development, marketing or general business operations, outlining the parts of supporting a business that you love will provide clarity and give you the opportunity to set yourself apart.

How to Become a Virtual Assistant: Step 2: Decide on Your Business Model

What I love about being a virtual assistant is that it provides me the opportunity to truly be the architect when it comes to building my life and business. I can scale up and down as much as I need.

Taking the time to decide how much you want to work, how much you want to make, how much time you want to dedicate is crucial.

You can choose to do this part-time, be a solo entrepreneur or build a business where you employ others to grow your mission. So, there are decisions you need to make.

  • Do you want to work hourly or do you prefer a retainer model?

  • Do you want to work Mon - Fri, 9 am - 5 pm or do you prefer to be project-based?

  • What will be your niche and within that niche, who do you want to serve?

Answering these questions before you launch, will make creating packages that much easier as well as sharing what you do that much clearer.

How to Become a Virtual Assistant: Step 3: Decide Who You Want to Serve

Think about your favorite coworker, boss or person you have collaborated with in the past. There is a reason why those people could ask you for anything – and it felt like it was never a problem. You were happy to do anything they asked of you. Those were your people.

On the flip side, think about an experience where you did not enjoy your working environment. What was it that irked you so much? Was it their personality? The way they asked for things? Their lack of direction? What made that experience so unnerving for you.

Trust that in your business, if you are not careful to explore this and define who your people are, patterns will repeat itself and you will find yourself dissatisfied.

The amazing thing about being the business owner is that you do have the opportunity to pick and choose who you work with. Be sure they are in alignment with who you are, the work you want to do and the impact you want to make.

How to Become a Virtual Assistant: Step 4: Fill In the Gaps!

When I speak with future virtual assistants who are curious about what I do and want to learn more, there is one thing that holds them back from getting it done. Because let’s be real, if you are even thinking of becoming a Virtual Assistant, it means that you are a person who is confident that you have the experience to get the job done! So why haven’t you done it yet?

Fear.

More specifically fear of the unknowns.

  • Do you have what it takes to own and operate a business?

  • How do you support multiple clients?

  • What if you mess up?

  • How do you find clients and get paid what you are worth?

The opposite of Fear is knowledge.

That is the only way to become more comfortable with a concept is to gain knowledge and put those fears to rest. Therefore, I recommend continuing your journey - continue to do your research.

Follow other virtual assistants on social media. Listen to their experience, learn from those who are out there and doing it.

Once you have completed your research and decided that this is 100% for you, I recommend investing in a program that teaches you the in’s and out’s of managing a virtual business.
